- Oops! Forgot to cross post this one! It went to c.s.a.advocacy first!
-
- Well, things certainly seem to be happening up there in Irvine.
- Undoubtedly, readers of Amiga Shopper (where I first found out), Format,
- Computing and CU Amiga will have noticed that Escom UK are offering a
- trade-in deal for your old A500/600. This would be a great idea. The
- question is that once they have got all them old machines... what the
- hell are they gonna do with them ? It has been suggested that they'll
- anatomise them and sell the parts, but this seems unlikely given the fact
- that the A500 OCS (or ECS if it's an A500+) would be virtually worthless,
- and that it would cost them more to extract the chips from an A600 than
- they'd get from selling the chips (because they're surfce mounted). That
- also applies to the ROMS, and the processor. The only thing that I could
- think of would be the CIA chips (but again, that would cost a bit to
- remove), or even the Chinon disc drives (remember, these HAVE got a
- DSKREADY signal!). That would attach a certain degree of risk for AT,
- though, if they expected to get a certain number. Another interesting
- point is that Escom are actually selling the machines at a loss of 50
- quid, as cost price is 300 quid. It will cost them money to have the
- goods sent back as well, don't forget. I'm hoping that we get an A600HD
- back so that I can swap the floppy drive with our A1200, rip out the HD
- and stick it in our A1200 and then send the thing back as a sans-hard
- drive A600. Cool, huh ? In my opinion, this is NOT a move towards being
- more liberal with the Amiga side of things. On NO account should you
- start easing off on your local Escom shop (in fact, give them more hassle
- than ever). Judging from the internal memo about this promotion, John
- Colbert (the person who is most blamed for the demise of Rumbelows
- according to EVERY member of former Rumbelows staff that I have spoken
- to) said that "it is a good opportunity to sell the Amigas". What he
- really means is "it's a good chance to finally be rid of them". I
- strongly doubt that Escom will be getting any more Amigas in, not even
- the Walker or the surfer (unless Herr Jost puts his foot down sharpish).
- I discussed this strategy with one of my collegues, and he suggested that
- even a loss of 50 quid is nothing, because after the big screw up around
- Christmas by Escom UK, they thought that they'd try and sell them back to
- AT. AT either refused or would take them back at a much lower price, so
- here they are. Another thing is that the price tickets do not say
- "Clearance", for obvious reasons, and also because it would invite many
- complaints. Don't let this stop you, though, feel free to complain away.
-
- A rather amusing example of Escom UK's evident incompetance (What ? You
- didn't believe me ?) was shown last Saturday. The assistant
- manager-cum-techie (and HE hates PeeCees now, after enduring DMA
- conflicts, IRQ values, and base addresses -unfortunately, he's going Mac,
- but it's a start!) opened the latest Point Of Sale material hot from Head
- Office. The first envelope he opened had some new price tickets for some
- kind of finance deal -about four copies of glossy A5 paper (which would
- cost about 25p a sheet of A4). In THE SAME POST, another envelope
- contained a letter saying "Destroy all the xxxx finance deal tickets
- immediately". Well, how's that for efficiency. I suppose it saves them
- from having to do it. At least this way, they can save some money by
- posting all their junk to us, and getting us to destroy it for them.
- Efficient or what ?
-
- Three of the five staff members in the shop where I work (Enfield, in
- case you didn't know) are walking out because they feel that Escom UK
- will go the same way as Rumbelows. The irony of it is that the same
- people that caused Rumbelows to sink, are running Escom UK. Heartening to
- know, isn't it ? If they manage to convince the manager to quit as well,
- then they can have my resignation. That would make Enfield branch
- completely staffless, and a major slap in the face to Head Office. With
- any luck it might wake them up... but I doubt it.
-
- Escom was supposed to have taken over Rumbelows. Looking at the
- situation, my collegues and I agree that it's more a case of Rumbelows
- (or indeed Intel) taking over Escom.
